INTERVIEW WITH ALGOA SUN

- Please state your name and surname, age, as well as the role you play in the band.

  • Lucille Barry 21 Drums
  • Jitka Brzek 23 Bass
  • Jenna Rose Lee 23 Guitar and Vocals
  • Wilkie Louw 25 Guitar Lead

- Who is most likely to stage dive and why?

Lucille answer

These days I would say Wilkie is most likely to stage dive, he’s really physically been getting into shows!

- Who is the bands sex symbol and why?

Jenna Answer

Luci, Wilkie and I are always being asked if Jitka has a boyfriend, so she is the definitely sex symbol of the band!

- Who always has their foot in their mouth and why?

Jenna Answer

Jitka again. She always seems to make a couple Foux Paus’, especially when it comes to celebs! But that’s why we love her J

 - Who is most likely to start a fight, why and about what?

 Jitka Answer

Old “Big baba J” our trusted security always keeping them crazy folks away from Luci.. he he .. Truthfully none of us are the fighting type.

 - How does one boy survive on tour when he is surrounded by three girls?

Wilkie answer.

I’m used to being surrounded by girls only, haha, I have a sister, and I played in bands with other girls before.

- Where did the band get its name?

Jenna Answer

I barely remember this, but I think one night while the power was out during band practice, we decided its finally time to choose a band name,

And I think Scarlet Box was one that was just shouted out, and it stuck!

- How was it formed and when?

 Jitka Answer

The band we have today sort of formed in two stages, Jenna originally had the desire to play music after leaving school round 2003, she got me on board back then and we starting playing seriously in 2004, gigging country wide, developing our styles etc, by 2007 the old members decided it was time for us and them to go our separate ways which I would say was the start of stage two: Wilkie and Luci. Will and Luci joined us early 2007 they kind of just came to us, we attempted interviews/auditions with them but in each case the click was undeniable, we just had to bring them on board. Since then they’ve taken us to a new level of performance.

- How would you describe your music?

Lucille Answer

I would say our music is a mature rock, with punk overtones at times.

- What other bands have you been in?

Lucille and Wilkie Answer

Luci – I played for Anti-cemetry,

Wilkie – I played for the Pinups

- How do you feel about opening for Seether in PE?

 Jenna answer

Jenna- the band is very excited! Not only are we avid fans of the band, but we have toured successfully with them before, so we’re only expecting an amazing show!

- Do you think it is important for successful SA bands to come home for tours and why?

 Lucille answer

Yes I do. I think its always good to remember home. Its where you started, and what got you to the point you are in your career, so thank it every now and then!

- How were you chosen to play in PE?

Jenna answer

We were told that we were of a selected bunch up for nomination to tour with Seether, and we all sat holding thumbs, and luckily enough, we got it!

- Have any of you ever been to PE? If so, what was your impression of the city?

 Jitka and Jenna answer

Jenna – PE ROCKS! Full stop!

Jitka – PE  - party city! Definitely tie with Pretoria as the Rock Capitals of SA, awesome bunch of people. We love playing in PE.

- Where do you draw your inspiration from when composing and writing lyrics?

Jenna answers

From absolutely everything! Things that have happened to me, or friends and family. I write about feelings. Who knows where they come from, haha.

- What would you consider to be your best song and why?

Lucille answer

I enjoy the fast paced, drum driven tracks like I Knew and Happy, although intricate songs like I Am seem to get us going just as well!

- Where was your debut performance held and how was it?

Jitka answer

Our first gig ever was at Roxy’s in Melville, it was the worst thing I ever had to do in my life, after that gig I actually had second thoughts and was like “no.. this gigging playing music thing is not for me, way too nerve-wrecking”.

- Where is your favourite venue to gig and why?

Jitka answer

Tappas in PE. Every time we’ve been to PE we’ve played at Tappas and the crowds just get larger and more responsive, most times the Tappas gig ends up being the best gig of the tour.

- What is the funniest thing that has happened to the band on stage?

 Wilkie answer

(maybe talk about smashing the rockshack light our with your guitar??) hehe.

- What was the worst thing that happened to the band?

Jenna answers

We are fortunate to have never had something bad happen to us. We’re a happy optimistic bunch, so when something “happens”, we wiggle our ways around it.

- What CD are you currently listening to at the moment?

Wilkie and Lucille answer

Luci and I are listening a lot to Blindside, I just love them!

Jenna answer

I’ve been listening to a lot of off rock stuff at the moment, such as Fiona apple and regina spektor. Lyrical poetry!

- Where do you wish to be in five years time?

Whole band agrees. We’d like to be releasing our 4th album, in America and Europe! Oh yes, and shooting a video in Los Angeles for some MTV awards.
